| One of the many surprising things for me to learn in the past
couple of years is that I have a knack for songwriting. Who knew? So far I've
written three, so I am certainly no match for Carole King or Dolly Parton.
However, the three I have written are pretty good!
The first one, Bunkin' With You In The Afterlife is the only one I have
recorded so far, which I did with the help of some members of the Girls
Can Jam Bluegrass Band in Roseburg, Oregon, along with my friends Jan Pool
and Charles Coursey in Dallas. Clearly, I have the worst voice on the
song, but it is, after all, my song. I wrote it, produced
it, and paid for it, so I got to sing the lead. I can't say that's how it
works across the board in the music business, but that's how it worked
this time.
Once I scratch together some more recording money and wheedle my friends
into helping me, we will trot back over to the studio and record a new
one
I wrote after the election in November. It's called Brave Enough to be
Peaceful, and was recently performed live in Portland by Melinda
Pittman's Broad Arts Theater Production of the musical comedy,
Ambushed.
The last song, written but not yet recorded, is called Saddle Up For
Jesus. All three of these songs are sung (in my new novel) by
Minnie Rhodes and her Many Roads Ministry, Cowgirls For The Lord. My plan
is to have a CD with these three songs on it included in a pocket at the
back of my novel, More Than Horizontal.
If you think you're gonna die unless you hear all of these songs right
now, you'll just have to call me up and ask me to sing them for you. I
will do that, secretly hoping the whole time I'm singing that you are a
member of the Dixie Chicks, or that you are Bonnie Raitt, or Emmylou
Harris, or Alison Krauss, or Nancy Griffith, or Pam Tillis or Martina
McBride, or Dolly Parton, or Reba McEntire, or somebody with some real
talent and clout. Just don't be a weird-O.
